Welcome to the Birley Carr Methodist Music &  Dramatic Society web site!

Next presentation will be IOLANTHE 24th to 28th March 2009.  Join us for this production.

The society presents the Savoy operas of Gilbert & Sullivan in March each year and stages a play production each October at Birley Carr in North Sheffield. The Society, which was founded in 1947, is a section of Birley Carr Methodist Church. The church is located on Fox Hill Road, Sheffield S6, about 2 km north of Hillsborough Football ground.

The facilities available for the society include a  generously sized stage and a hall with a seating capacity of around 120 people.  It is of great advantage that rehearsals can take place on the stage where the productions are presented.  The society has about 40 singing/acting members who take part in plays or operettas.

In  October 2004, the society presented  'When we are Married' to near full houses who appreciated a successful production of this well loved Yorkshire comedy.   In March 2005, a production of 'The Mikado' played mainly to full houses and was well received.  The society presented 'Ruddigore'  in March 2006,  a superb show combining superb music with memorable scenes which was a delight to take part in.  We presented 'Pirates of Penzance' in March 2007, a show that received a lot of praise and played to full houses.  We thank our local community for the continuing support that they give our presentations.

The society presented the play  'Murdered to Death', a 'spoof'  Miss Marple comedy murder in October 2007.  The play, written by Peter Gordon, had our audiences 'dying of laughter' following the inept progress of the murder investigation by Inspector Pratt.  It played to near full houses for three evenings and was well received.

We presented 'HMS Pinafore' in March 2008 and it played to essentially 'full houses'.  Reviews in the local 'Sheffield Star' newspaper praised the standard of the societies production.  A comedy entitled 'Lord Arthur Saville's Crime' was the play  presented in October 2008.  This delightful comedy by Constance Cox based upon a short story by Oscar Wilde was a joy to perform.  The societies set for the production was complemented by our audiences.

 We have now commenced rehearsals for the opera presentation in March 2009 which is;

New members, particularly men, who wish to take part in plays or operettas are always welcome to attend rehearsals which are held on Thursdays with additional meetings on Mondays nearer the production date.

We always need assistance  in the productions either front stage or backstage.    In particular, assistance from people interested in helping the construction of the scenery for productions would be welcomed.  Please contact the webmaster if you are interested in participating in any way, or come along to a rehearsal.

The society is grateful for the funding received from the Southey & Owlerton Community Chest in 2005. This has enabled purchase of a  modern stage lighting system which will enhance our scenic presentation capabilities.
